Clipping Ads is so “yesterday”

Filed under: Job Search, Organization, Tools — Michael Brennan-White @ 10:44 pm

Job Search Log offers you a free location to store the ads you are interested in applying for. You don’t have to be using a specific job search engine, be on unemployment, you can live anywhere and there are no restrictions on the number of ads you can create.

There are two simple ways you can start adding ads to Job Search Log. One is to add them directly into the Ad Entry Form . All that is required to create the ad record is to copy and paste the location of the job posting (URL), title of the job and the text job ad into the Ad page. Once you save the page, it will immediately be available for your viewing in the Saved Ads page .

The other method to add ads into Job Search Log is through the JSL Bookmarklet. Drag the link JSL Ad Bookmarklet to your links bar. Then from any job post you are interested in applying for, select the text of the ad and click the JSL Ad bookmark. The ad, url and title of the page will be saved to your profile and you will receive notification that an ad was saved through an email message. The best thing about it is that Job Search Log does not display, the ad is added behind the scenes. Click here to see more information about the Job Search Log Bookmarklet.

Like every page in Job Search Log, only you will see the ads you’ve saved since they are tied to your private Job Search Log profile.

What good is a Cover Letter without a resume?

Filed under: Job Search, Organization, Tools — Michael Brennan-White @ 11:07 am

I’ve spent many hours time working on creating a cover letter wizard. Completing these pages will create a letter template that is used when generating the “mail merged” correspondence from Job Search Log.

I haven’t spent enough time talking about the other part of the correspondence. The File Upload Manager. Job Search Log allow you to upload resumes and other files to be attached to a emailed piece of correspondence generated by the application. You are welcome to upload multiple resumes which you can use to tailor your application to the job.

You may include two attachments with each email and the resume you attach is linked to the job you are applying for, not the cover letter so you are given the most flexibility possible when creating the application for the job.

The uploads are restricted to only documents (doc, pdf, htm, txt). If you find there are file formats that are not uploadable, please contact me through the Job Search Log contact form.

JobSearchLog Jumpstart Now Even Faster

Filed under: Job Search, Organization, Tools — Michael Brennan-White @ 6:04 pm

I’ve automated the creation of 9/10’s of the work to create the Jump Start Job Search Log . In a nutshell what the Jump Start does is create Job Sources in Job Search Log which are your saved searches that are bookmarked and available once you login to the web site.

These new bookmarked searches are built using the location and search term criteria you choose when you fill out the JumpStart form. We create the Job Sources for searches at the following sites:

This list will probably expand and change based on input from users. Once the list of Sources are finalized I will probably give the option to choose which sources are created on the form. Indeed and SimplyHired are really good because they pass along an aggregated feed from the major search engines.

More major updates in the next couple of weeks. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with requests and suggestions and visit the JobSearchLog.com site . Remember, JobSearchLog is free to use, available anywhere you have internet access, and you are welcome to invite other jobseekers to visit.

JobSearchLog.com is NOT

Filed under: Introduction, Organization, Tools — Michael Brennan-White @ 11:17 pm

Just to clear my brain.  Job Search Log is not:

  •  A Job Search Engine
  • A place to login to your state’s Unemployment Department Pages
  • Using your personal information for any nefarious purpose
  • Making any money yet.
  • Hard to Use

I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions about JobSearchLog

I can’t even afford a laptop for them to steal

Filed under: Introduction, Organization, Tools — Michael Brennan-White @ 4:31 pm

DALLAS — A laptop containing personal information from thousands of blood donors _ including Social Security numbers and medical information _ was stolen from a local office of the American Red Cross, but officials said the information was encrypted.

How many of these stories have we seen in the last couple of weeks. It is beyond comprehension that these kind of things are happening as often as they are. And then a Red Cross Spokesman said: Local officials alerted police and national Red Cross offices, Lundy said. Donors were not notified about the missing information, and the Red Cross had no legal obligation to do so. That’s great to know they had no legal obligation. How about a moral obligation?

I was watching one day as my wife was entering in the information to sign up for a Paw Points campaign for Kitty Litter. It was your typical marketing campaign asking for names and information about everyone in the house. It is because of experiences like that I decided to ask for only the bare minimum of information to use Job Search Log.

It does seem rather limiting not to ask for more than a username and email address but it hasn’t limited what we are able to develop. Look for more features in the immediate future.

Better Job Feeds. Indeed!!!!

I’ve updated most of the pages so far to reflect our soon to be status as an affiliate with Indeed. Thais means that not only will I be able to receive income (limited as it may be) but it also works within the mission of the page.

The pages should be all set to go on Monday.

Google Fan Boy Strikes Again

Can I say how much I friggin’ love Google in a non-creepy fraternal sort of way.  Analytics was so worth the wait to get accepted for.

US Map showing JSL visits for the last 2 days

This is a map of where my visitors have come from over the last couple of days since I finally set up the Analysis.  The big circles indicates a larger concentration of visitors.  Way to go, Alabama.  Still love ya, Texas.

Newsletter #1

Filed under: Introduction, Newsletter, Organization — Michael Brennan-White @ 12:04 am

Hi,

A potential user of the Job Search Log asked a few questions before registering to use JobSearchLog.

K's question:
Before I start using a tool like this, I'd like to know more about how it is being supported financially. Can you tell me more about why it is free? Thank you.

My Response:
Your skepticism is not only warranted, but one I share myself when testing new software.  To explain why it is free, I need to tell you a little about myself.

I worked for a software company  that went out of business 1 week after 9/11 due to the company's owner losing big in the market immediately following 9/11.

To say I was lost when I was laid off would be an understatement.  Luckily though I lived in New Hampshire I had worked in Boston so I received Massachusetts unemployment and my family was able to survive on the better payments I received  while I looked.  I spent several hours a day looking for jobs filling out the long registration forms, submitting my resume in the formats they would accept and writing custom cover letters to send to potential employers.  Along the way due to the hundreds of jobs I applied for, I would forget who I applied to, what I applied for and said in that letter, and the specifics of the job.  In many cases the original job ad was no longer on the web since they were in the interview process.

I looked on the web for a solution and found that though some job engines had a capacity to track the jobs found in their pages there was no way to track jobs found in other engines.  Not even the unemployment department had something like that.

Since I was a database developer I wrote a small application that met my needs with a database so I could do mail merge letters and track the jobs I applied for.  Luckily I got a job offer and didn't need my little program anymore.  I would think about it every once in a while but I was so busy learning web database and page development that I never found the time to complete it.

Then my wife lost her job and since I was such a wonderful husband, I was patient for about a week.  In my infinite wisdom I decided that her problem was a lack of organization.  We agreed that she should be better organized.  She tried the program I had written previously but found it very cumbersome  to use for a non-techie.  So I decided to write a web page in September '05 since I was taking the week off.  Many months later, you have a web application created weeknights after 8 (when the kids go to bed) and through many winter weekends.  I had several people look at what I've done and thought it was something that others could use.

Now, to finally address your concern about the financial viability of a project such as this.  Two years ago, I bought a domain called Carbodehydrated.com and started paying a hosting provider a modest amount each month.  I used those pages to test out new technology and improve my skills that weren't necessary to know while working in the  Intranet environment and to blog about my low-carb diet.  When I decided to start this project I had all the software I  needed to do the work (99% of what I use is Open Source Software like the mySQL database).   The only cost associated with this project so far is the very modest hosting fees, my time and my diet.  Approximately 3 months ago I bought the domain jobsearchlog.com at a very cheap rate for 3 years.  I have space on the page to have some advertising in the future, but right now I only have a link to Google which will pay me $1 per person each time they download FireFox and the Google Toolbar.  I haven't made enough yet to pay a month of the hosting fees but I know that as more people start using the project that money will be recouped.   Currently I have been using the jobsearchlog program to send emails and a flier about the application to the States and Canadian provinces, Job Networking groups in the United States and Canada, and eventually the Transition Assistance Program for soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan seeking links be placed on their pages.

I'd like to say thanks to all the new people who registered this week to use JobSearchLog.  I hope that it is helping you meet your goals.

That's all for now.  I like to hear from people who are using my labor of love.  If you have any questions, complaints or suggestions, I welcome you to contact me at info@jobsearchlog.com.

Good Luck with your Job Search,

Michael

Updating the Letter Pages

Filed under: Blogroll, Introduction, Organization — Michael Brennan-White @ 11:55 pm

The Letter Generation pages are pretty weak.  I am working on the updates to the pages on my local copy of the app.  I would say we are a week away from live time.

Tonight I have set up my first PimpMyJobSearch (yes, a new idea) client or should I say victim.  More on this late.
